According to the Partnership for a Drug Free America, each day approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time and a majority of those drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
The Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department accepts prescription pills at our office year round with no questions asked. They are stored securely in our evidence room until they are transferred to partnering agencies to be incinerated. The Sheriff’s Department also participates with the DEA Drug Take Back program that occurs semi-annually with multiple drop off locations throughout the county. The purpose of this program is to allow for safe, legal, and environmentally-friendly disposal of extra drugs that patients have not used.
Syringes are also accepted year round by dropping them off at the Sheriff’s Department or by calling and requesting a deputy pick them up if you don’t feel comfortable handling them.
